Printing Techniques

This guide explains the four key printing technologies used in Podbul's print on demand production flow: DTF, DTG, UV printing and Eco-Solvent printing. Each method is evaluated on its principles, suitable materials, color accuracy, durability and cost-speed balance. This comparison provides clear and practical guidance on the most frequently asked questions such as “DTF or DTG?”, “What is UV printing?” and makes it easy to choose the right printing technique for your order.

Basic Principles and Operating Logic

Each technique is based on a different chemistry and transfer logic, which affects the feel, adhesion and process steps. The type of ink, substrate requirements and curing method are decisive in making the right choice.

  • DTF: The design is printed in CMYK+W on film, fixed with adhesive powder and heat activated. It is transferred to the fabric by press. It is a versatile technique, highly adaptable on cotton, polyester, blended fabrics and flexible substrates. The most practical and reliable method when durability and a wide variety of fabrics are required.

  • DTG: Ink is sprayed directly onto the fabric. Dark colors require pre-treatment and a white undercoat. The print leaves a very soft grip on the surface and provides a natural look. It performs best on 100% cotton fabrics and produces ideal results on thin and breathable products.

  • UV printing: UV cured inks are instantly hardened by light and fixed to the surface. Used on hard and coated surfaces.

  • Eco-Solvent: An ink technology containing environmentally friendly solvents applied to paper/synthetic surfaces such as posters and canvas. The ink penetrates into the material and shows high resistance to outdoor conditions and fading. It offers photo quality clarity.

Appropriate Product and Material Selection

The choice mainly depends on the nature of the surface and the expected feel. When deciding between DTF vs DTG for cotton and blends, grip and breathability come to the fore; DTF for polyester fabrics, UV printing on hard surfaces and Eco-Solvent printing on paper and canvas are the most suitable.

Technical Recommended use Advantages Constraints
DTF Cotton/blends, dark textiles, versatility on mixed grounds Wide material compatibility, vibrant colors, stockable transfer Film may have a feel, correct heat/press setting is critical
DTG T-shirt/sweatshirt with high cotton content; designs with large color gradation Soft grip, fine detail and gradient achievement Pre-treatment and curing required, consistency of mixtures may vary
UV Printing Ornament, acrylic products Instant cure, high clarity, spot white and glossy surface effect Adhesion properties on hard surfaces may vary depending on the material
Eco-Solvent Posters, canvas paintings, high resolution artistic prints Museum quality color depth, UV resistance, odorless printing Only suitable for roll materials (paper, foil, canvas)

DTG for a natural, soft feel on cotton T-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies and baby products; DTF works better on dark colors or when high durability is required. DTF offers the most consistent result on polyester and blends. For tote bags, DTG provides a more natural look, while DTF creates a brighter and more durable print. UV printing is used on hard surface products such as ornaments and acrylic. The most suitable printing technique is selected according to the product type; Podbul production team recommends and applies the printing method that gives the most stable and cleanest result.

While UV printing is used for hard surface products, high resolution and long-lasting Eco-Solvent printing technology is preferred for posters, canvas paintings and artistic paper prints.

Color Accuracy and Durability

Color accuracy depends on the profile used, white ink setting and surface color, while durability is shaped by correct curing/transfer and use of the product according to cleaning and washing instructions. Fabric type and surface finish significantly affect the results.

DTG: Achieves a wide color gamut with the right pre-treatment and ICC profile; transitions and gradations are successful. Wash resistance is sensitive to curing time and temperature, so correct heat setting is important.

DTF Gives a vivid image with high white opacity and contrast. With the right powder and press setting, wash durability is very high and consistent results are achieved on most fabrics.

UV printing: Consistent color and immediate use on hard surfaces. Provides high clarity on acrylic and decorative products.

Eco-Solvent: Museum-quality resolution for artistic prints and posters.

Consistency is ensured by selecting the appropriate color profile, white ink density and printing parameters for each product in the Podbul production flow.
