Key Differences of DTF, DTG and UV

The right print on demand printing method should be determined by the product's area of use and the target market.
DTG printing, DTG printing is based on spraying pigment ink directly onto the textile surface. The best results are achieved on cotton substrates with high fiber density; the ink penetrates into the fabric, creating a natural and soft textural effect. While direct printing can be applied on light-colored substrates, a white primer layer is required on dark substrates and improper application of this layer may reduce print strength.DTG performance may vary depending on the weaving density of the fabric, surface smoothness, pre-treatment quality, accuracy of the print profile and the final heat setting stage.

DTF printing, is based on the principle of applying pigment ink to the film layer and fixing it to the textile surface by heat transfer. It gives stable results in textile production due to its high opacity, intense color transfer and adaptability to different fabric compositions. It offers consistent coverage on both light and dark substrates and can work on cotton, cotton-poly blends and stretch fabrics (with lycra/elastane content) while maintaining surface integrity.

The durability of the print depends on the application of the appropriate temperature, pressure, time and correct curing steps.

UV printing, works on the principle of instant curing of the ink under UV light. It provides high resolution, scratch resistance and stability on hard, smooth and coated surfaces. The ink adheres to the surface by forming a film layer; this structure increases color accuracy and strengthens mechanical durability.

Fabric and Product Matching

On cotton t-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies and baby products, DTG printing penetrates the fabric texture to create a more natural and softer surface. For dark colored products, the fabric surface is prepared with a special pretreatment before DTG application; this ensures that the ink adheres evenly to the fabric, maintaining color accuracy and print quality.

When dark colors or high coverage is required, DTF printing gives a more consistent and opaque result. Thanks to the film layer, it offers consistent color intensity in both light and dark tones.

On polyester and cotton-poly blends, DTF provides more stable performance thanks to its layer structure. DTG is not preferred on these surfaces as it may fade quickly and show uneven adhesion.

On tote bags, DTG provides a more matt and natural look that blends with the fabric texture, while DTF creates a brighter, contrasting and durable print. The choice depends on the detail density and color structure of the design.

UV printing is used on hard surface products such as ornaments and acrylic night lights. UV ink forms a film layer on the surface, providing high resolution, gloss and scratch resistance.
