DTF Transfer
DTF transfer is a technology that enables clear, vibrant and durable printing of multi-color designs. As the DTF method is used in the Podbul production process, vendors only upload their designs in the correct format; technical implementation and print settings are fully managed by Podbul.
What is DTF Transfer?
DTF (Direct to Film) is printing the pattern on film, curing it with powder adhesive and transferring it to the fabric with a heat press. Multicolor printing ensures high sharpness in fine detail and small print. Durability increases when you follow the right temperature, pressure and time and washing performance is consistent. Please refer to the manufacturer's documentation and the general ranges below as the product may vary according to film-powder-ink combinations.
Transfer Instructions: Heat Press Settings and Application
The following steps are a safe starting point for most DTF transfers. It is recommended to make a small test print for the first production run as there may be a difference in “hot/warm/cold peel” depending on the type of film used.
- Preparation: Pre-press the fabric for 3-5 seconds; remove moisture and wrinkles, clean the surface with a lint picker.
- Positioning: Place the DTF transfer face up; check alignment.
- Press Settings: 150-165°C, 8-15 sec; pressure medium-high (approx. 4-6 bar / 40-60 PSI). Shorten the time for thin fabric, increase 1-3 sec for thick fabric.
- Peeling: Apply cold peel (when completely cooled) or warm peel depending on the type of film; gently lift from the corner.
- Final Press: Seal the surface for 5-8 sec with baking paper or suitable sheet for matt/glossy finish.
Note: In case of risk of dye migration (especially red/burgundy polyester), lower the temperature to 140-150°C, keep the time in the range of 10-12 s and apply a short final press. If the pressure is too high, flashing and streaking may occur at the edges.
Recommended Settings by Fabric
This table summarizes typical temperature and time ranges for different fabric types. Pressure recommendations are given in the “Note” column; slight variations by machine are normal.
| Fabric | Temperature / Duration | Note |
|---|---|---|
| %100 Pamuk (tişört, sweatshirt) | 155-165°C / 10-15 sec | Pressure: medium-high. Mostly cold or warm peeling; 5-8 s final press recommended. |
| Polyester / Performance Fabric | 140-150°C / 10-12 sec | Pressure: medium. Low heat against risk of dye migration; short final press (3-5 sec). |
| Cotton-Poly Blend (50/50, 65/35) | 150-160°C / 10-13 sec | Pressure: medium-high. Start with 155°C on the first attempt. |
| Lycra / Stretch Fabric (spandex, elastane) | 145-155°C / 8-12 sec | Pressure: medium. Excessive heat may reduce flexibility; warm peeling is preferred. |
| Thick Fabric (hoodie, denim) | 160-165°C / 12-18 sec | Pressure: medium-high. Pre-press for 5-8 sec; use press pads on seams and pockets. |
| Sensitive Surface (softshell, nylon coating) | 140-150°C / 8-10 sec | Pressure: medium-low. Short double press (2 x 6-8 sec) can be tried for adhesion. |
If the manufacturer recommends a “hot peel” film, a 6-8 s press and instant peel can be applied at the same temperature. In any case, a short final press for full adhesion of the edges increases durability.
Common Mistakes and Solutions
Common errors in DTF transfer are usually due to temperature, time or pressure balance. The following checklist will help you quickly improve print quality.
- Bubbles Pre-press dry the fabric; clean the surface of dust and lint; apply the final press with baking paper for 5-8 s.
- Peeling/Edge Lift: Add 1-2 s of time or slightly increase pressure; if cold peeling is required, do not pull until completely cooled.
- Excessive Heat Flash: Reduce temperature by 5-10°C; use baking paper instead of Teflon; reduce pressure to medium.
- Dye Migration (Polyester): Go down to 140-150°C range; short press and short final press; test print on dark substrates.
- Color Shift/Double Image: Align press table; use press pad in seam/zipper areas.
- Drill Marks/Press Marks: Reduce pressure; use thicker protective sheet; keep the final press short.
- Wrong Peel Temperature: Check the film type; follow the instructions for hot/warm/cold peeling.
- Low Durability: Do not skip the final press; allow 24 hours curing time before washing.
With DTF printing, the right heat and press settings directly affect order quality and customer satisfaction. Consistent settings reduce returns and increase store ratings. At Podbul, we already apply these standards in our production line, so for merchants who are just starting print on demand processes or looking to improve their current quality, this guide ensures fast and stable results.
